KI BARAK SELEM is a one-man Balinese Pagan Metal project founded by Putra Pande in 1998, blending Black Metal with the traditional sounds of Balinese gamelan. Rather than using local culture as mere ornamentation, the project draws inspiration from Bali's ancient spiritual traditions that have long remained hidden behind tourism and religious formalism.
The lyrical themes explore esoteric teachings such as Kanda Pat, Bhairawa Tantra, Pengeleakan, Rwa Bhineda, and other ancient Balinese philosophies that are often considered taboo, misunderstood, or even condemned by parts of society. Through relentless riffs, ritualistic atmospheres, traditional instrumentation, and multilingual lyrics, KI BARAK SELEM seeks to reclaim these forgotten narratives—not as superstition or provocation, but as living cultural and spiritual heritage.
After years of silence, the project was revived with the release of "महाकाली, You're the True Protector" (2023), followed by "KANDA PAT SARI" (2024), and most recently "Kidung Bhairawa Prabhu" (2026). Rooted in authenticity rather than folklore, KI BARAK SELEM transforms ancient Balinese wisdom into uncompromising Black Metal while inviting listeners to look beyond fear, prejudice, and convention.
KI BARAK SELEM was born from the belief that the darkest knowledge is often the most misunderstood.
Bali possesses an ancient spiritual legacy that extends far beyond its popular image of temples, ceremonies, and paradise landscapes. Hidden beneath that surface are teachings such as Kanda Pat, Bhairawa Tantra, Pengeleakan, and other esoteric traditions that have survived for centuries. Many of these subjects remain taboo, are rarely discussed openly, and are sometimes dismissed or condemned by those who neither study nor understand them.
This is where KI BARAK SELEM finds its voice.
Black Metal has never been about seeking acceptance. It exists to question established narratives, confront forbidden subjects, and give expression to what society chooses to silence. KI BARAK SELEM follows that spirit—not through anti-religious rhetoric or empty provocation, but through the exploration of ancient Balinese spiritual knowledge that exists beyond conventional boundaries.
Our music does not seek to preach, convert, or romanticize darkness. Instead, it confronts the listener with the paradoxes that have always existed within Balinese philosophy: creation and destruction, purity and impurity, fear and wisdom, light and shadow. These are not contradictions to be defeated, but complementary forces that shape existence itself.
By fusing relentless Black Metal with the hypnotic resonance of traditional Balinese gamelan, KI BARAK SELEM seeks to preserve voices that risk being forgotten—not by placing them inside museums, but by allowing them to breathe through contemporary extreme music.
This is not an act of rebellion against culture.
It is an act of remembering what culture itself has chosen to forget.
